Chapter Fourteen
Mother left the following day with the promise of keeping in touch with me. I promise her I will make a doctor’s appointment as soon as I figure it out my insurance situation. I drag my feet on doing it because I really don't want to have to face this. Still, two weeks go by and I'm interrupted while I'm sitting at my computer by an abrupt knock at my door. I'm not expecting anyone, so I jump when I hear the constant rapping.
I look out through the peephole and my heart skips a beat. It looks like Blaise is standing on the other side of the door. I tremble as a turn the knob and open it and there he stands with a look of concern on his face.
“Blaise, what are you doing here?” I ask as my voice rises louder than normal.
“Marta, I had to come. Please, can I come in?” he begs.
I open the door and let him inside. I'm not sure why he's here, but the look of determination on his face scares me. He marches into my apartment and looks around for a moment before he settles his dark brown eyes back on me.
“Would you like to have a seat? And then please tell me why you're here. Would you like something to drink?” I ask as I back towards my kitchen.
“Thank you. Yes, I'll have a seat and a drink. Sure that would be great, thanks,” he says with his voice firm with just a bit of shakiness.
I retreat to my kitchen to make his drink. My hands shake as I hold the glass and pour a soda. My mouth is dry and I feel like I have cotton stuck between my cheeks. Breathe, Marta, breathe. It’s going to be okay. I go back into the living room and hand Blaise his drink and have a seat in the chair across from him.
“Marta, I've heard the news. Is it true? Tell me, is that right?” he asks, his eyes wide.
“What have you heard Blaise? Is what true?” I counter, hoping it’s not what I think.
I stare at him. My heart is beating so quickly that I fear he can see it beating through my clothes. Suddenly, I feel like I'm going to hurl, but instead, I take a deep breath and force it to stay down.
“Are you pregnant?” He stares a hole through me.
I sigh and look down as my face drops. I know he already knows the answer. Where in hell did he hear that? I look up at him; I'm not happy. “Just where did you hear that from?” I ask, knowing very well where he has heard it. I know my mother tends to have a big mouth sometimes, even though she promised me she wouldn't tell anybody, not even Miguel. Apparently, she broke that promise.
“I went to visit my dad and Connie. They talked about you and about us meeting someday. Your mother told me that you are expecting a baby,” he says flatly.
